Václav Klaus must sign the Lisbon treaty! [EN]
On Saturday, 17th October 2009, Michael Duller, the Chairman of the new pan-European party Europe United announced that Europe United will support a Campaign calling for Václav Klaus to sign the Lisbon treaty as soon as possible after the ruling of the constitutional court in Brno.

He stated that “it is our position that the European Union and its member state must respect the constitutional procedures of the Czech Republic. Therefore ratification can only occur once the constitutional court has reached a verdict on whether the Treaty of Lisbon is compatible with the Czech Republic’s constitution. If the constitutional court deems the Treaty compatible with the Czech constitution, we urge the President of the Czech Republic Václav Klaus to cease his opposition to the treaty.
We consider the reservations voiced by Václav Klaus with regard to the application of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union on the Beneš decrees as a ploy to prevent the ratification of the Lisbon Treaty. The Treaty clearly states that the charter only applies to European Union legislation and can not affect property rights in the Czech Republic. We urge the Czech Government which has come to the same conclusion, to strongly object to Václav Klaus’ position in the Czech media and resent his attempt to seize nationalistic feelings and resentments for his political goals.
Furthermore we have to point out that – even though during the ratification process questionable means have been employed – this cannot justify Václav Klaus’ behaviour which is at least questionable in terms of the authority and function of the office of the President of the Czech Republic. It is our firm belief that in order to achieve a democratic European Union, people of good conscience have to constructively raise their voice for a liberal and democratic European constitutional order.
The Lisbon Treaty will not be the last reform of the European Union. Attempts or support of the use of deception to prevent its ratification will only weaken the position of reasonable criticism on the constitutional order of the European Union in future reforms. We must not allow the voices for more democracy in the European Union to be taken captive by the irresponsible and erratic behaviour of a single person.”
